Scent-scaping: how to transform your home for the holidays
Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, and although it’s a much-anticipated hosting period, a full house can sometimes feel overwhelming. To help nurture and prepare your space for seasonal soirées, our aromatherapy experts have put together a room-by-room scent-scaping guide designed, with family, friends and festivity in mind.
What is scent-scaping?
Scent-scaping is the art of transforming a space through the power of aromatherapy. It’s most commonly achieved through the use of candles, oil diffusers, incense and room sprays. Although scent-scaping can be practiced in spaces of all sizes, within a home it can be a useful way to encourage different atmospheres and moods from room to room.
Kitchen
Setting the scene for your festive meal, we’ve put together some aromatherapy options designed to bring your kitchen to life, complementing the conversations and celebrations of the table.
For the earlier hours, we recommend a fresh, citrus blend to help awaken the senses and boost morning moods. A zingy blend of Grapefruit, Orange and Mandarin Organic Essential Oils is a vibrant addition to any kitchen, working well in a burner or diffuser. Citrus scents are often favored in the kitchen due to their natural ability to help neutralize odors, acting as the perfect meal-prep scent.
As the day progresses and the mood becomes perhaps a little merrier, consider transitioning away from citrus essential oils to a more indulgent, evening-appropriate blend. Our Optimism Essential Blend includes jasmine and black peppercorn, offering a rich, warm aroma to soften the senses and lean into a cozy evening mood.
A candle is a great way to layer different scents into a space and build ambiance with a warm glow. Our Calming Candle will perfectly complement either of these aromatherapy options.

Just a couple of drops of each will be enough to scent the space, but the ratio can be tailored to your preferences to create a more bespoke scent for your home.

Living Room
Whether your Thanksgiving tradition involves sitting back to watch the parade, or exchanging moments of gratitude, this room is a cozy, calming space – a place to rest post-turkey.
Depending on the energy levels of your guests (or yourself!) there are two aromatherapy blends that we recommend: a bespoke blend of Frankincense, Bergamot and Mandarin Organic Essential oils and our ready-to-use De-stress Essential Oil Blend. The former being a livelier daytime concoction, while the latter helps to settle minds and welcome in the calm of an evening.
Why not bring the Calming Candle into the space too and warm the lounge with some low lights and natural botanical aromas.

Bathroom
When it comes to hosting, a serene, beautifully scented bathroom is essential for creating a space of respite and refreshment for guests.
A reed diffuser is a wonderful option for scenting smaller spaces such as bathrooms, helping to keep them fresh and fragranced throughout the season. The warm earthy top notes of pine in the Winter Woodland Reed Diffuser makes it an ideal scent for the winter months – encouraging tranquility and fond festive memories.
Or, if wintertime scents aren’t to your taste, you can’t go wrong with a soft, refreshing fragrance such as the Balancing Aromatherapy Reed Diffuser. With top notes of frankincense and geranium, this relaxing blend will help to create a serene space for your guests. When the diffuser is running low, refills are available, and the reeds – replaceable!
Bedroom
To create a soothing space for overnight guests, we recommend filling the bedroom with naturally calming scents to encourage a restful (well-deserved) night’s sleep.
Scent plays an important part in preparing your body and mind for a good night’s sleep, with aromatherapy blends and essential oils being a part of relaxation rituals throughout history. For the bedroom, we recommend two Essential Blends: Calming and Nighttime.
Our Calming Essential Blend heroes chamomile, mandarin and bergamot to help ground and settle the mind, while Nighttime Essential Blend features a restorative, bedtime combination of lavender, vetiver and rose. Both help create a tranquil space and combined with a Goodnight Pillow Mist, these aromatherapy favorites will encourage a restful slumber.
And if it’s not your year to host, don’t turn up empty handed…
